World Collage Day 2024 project
Glueless collage, untitled, Torea Frey, 2024
It’s hard to believe World Collage Day is only a few months away. For a holiday I had no idea existed a scant five years ago, it’s rapidly become one of my favorite times of year.
I’m planning to spend WCD 2024 in Seattle, with some of my fellow collage makers. And I’m working on something a bit new: a performance art piece of sorts, centered around the distribution of mini collages.
The general conceit: as I pass through midlife, I’m pondering my mortality and what the purpose of all this is (as one does). And the conclusion I’ve reached is that we get this one wild little life, and we might as well have some fun with it. My coterie includes a variety of women in something of a similar headspace, and one thing we’ve remarked upon is how we’re running out of fucks to give. So this year, my 40th, I thought I might as well go ahead and just give ALL the rest of mine away. This will form the core of a performance/public art distribution.
I will be creating a series of mini-collages, no bigger than 3x3”. And I’ll be tossing them all in a bag, then standing on a street corner and passing them out.
To up the impact, I’d also love to find co-conspirators who are generally exhausted, over it, and ready to embrace their weirdest and most authentic selves. So I’m soliciting “fucks” from anyone interested.
What do you need to do? It’s pretty simple. Make an analog collage that is small. Maybe you want it to be a literal interpretation, with a typographic spin. Or maybe you want to make a collage of whatever you’re over, ready to let go of. Send them to me by May 1, 2024, to take part! That’s right, feel free to give me your fucks, and I’ll toss them gamely into the wind — or thrust them into the waiting hands of an intrigued passerby.
Drop me a line for my mailing address, or reach out with any questions. Let’s have some fun!
